Get real

I have tons of packing to do before my friends come over and help me move on Saturday so of course I'm watching TV. Sometimes I watch this show called "The 4400" on the USA Network. It's a pretty good show, but after watching part of tonight's episode, I must tell you that I take issue with some of the writing. Here's why:

Scene: A woman and a little girl are sitting at the breakfast table each reading different parts of a newspaper.

The little girl giggles.

Woman: What are you laughing at?
Little Girl: Marmaduke.

Okay, come on. How do you expect me to suspend reality enough to believe that somebody laughed at Marmaduke? 4400 people abducted by UFOs throughout history and returned on the same day? No problem-it could happen. The abductees now have special powers that allow them to read minds, heal the sick, etc.? Absolutely. Hey-you can't come back from a UFO unchanged. But somebody actually thinking Marmaduke is funny? Now you're pushing it, USA Network. Let's try to keep ourselves a little grounded in reality here and stick to storylines like the one where that guy broke all those windows with his mind.

On a sidenote, wouldn't it be sweet if you could break stuff with your mind? Sometimes when I have road rage I pretend I have this power and try to will the windshield of "the offender's" car to crack right down the middle. That way I'm not wishing for anything to happen that could actually hurt the driver but rather just cost him or her like $100 and a headache. It's a win-win really.

This is why I love you. We both hate Marmaduke and know it's the stupidest and most humorless thing ever.

You're thinking of Family Circus. Marmaduke is the one about the dog, where if you read it you realize you've lost valuable time and IQ points.

I watch the 4400 (damn you, Tivo!) because it's got a relatively interesting premise, but the writing is consistently terrible. If I had powers, tho, I'd be like the baby and be wrecking havoc. Imagine the number of customer support people who would spontaneously combust, and the drivers whose heads would implode, splattering their windows with a thick layer of red goo. And John would've been sterile ages ago.

Hey, I am a 4400 addict (well I love ALL TV pretty much) but that little girl is from like the 1940's she probably would think marmaduke was funny. Thats back when kids didnt have anything good to watch on TV, and the paper was probably like, a nickel, so they had to enjoy their cheap entertainment.

Aww, I was looking forward to a Tom/Katie engagement and a Hit me Baby One More Time update all in one! I know you're working on something good...

Right -- Marmaduke is just like family circle...just sitting at the bottom of the page, waiting to suck.

I have a few "hit me" comments for you all. One: Never wear a gigantic red foam codpiece. It will clash with your gigantic flame-capped top hat. Two: If you were semi-hot 20 years ago, don't take a few hits of X and go on national TV and try to do a sexy strip. Drugs do not make time go backwards. Three: Howard, you looked at peace with who you are today. And you're still a talented little fucker. Good show.

Does anyone else miss that Sarah chick? It's been like days. Everyone is like "Adam why are you full of sad expressions?" and I try to explain, but they don't understand.

Ugh. Watched the 440 thing aain, and again with the terrible writing. They completely misused the term noblesse oblige. Geez. Non-network Tv shows sure can suck.

How do you think that goes down? The writer puts in the line, dozens of people must review it, all the way down to the actor that says it -- and nobody knew better? I'm losing faith in cable.
